Crash/freeze while searching through the movie

Post by highc »

Hi,

I've had this a couple of times with some movies, but this is the first time I can reproduce it: For some movies, when searching/scrolling through the movie with the big and the small slider, smart cutter crashes or freezes. With the current movie, I tried it a few times, and it keeps reappearing: If I jump with the big slider to approximately the beginning of the movie, fine tune with the small slider, set the start point, then scroll, with the big slider, to a certain point towards the end of the movie, smart cutter freezes and some times crashes.

While I was typing this message, I ran another few tests. At one point, smart cutter recovered, but since then showed negative figures as the current time code. So I guess this is related to the other issue with time codes which I posted about a few days ago. The movie I'm talking about is about 7 gigs in size, and a lot depends on scrolling to the right jump points (different screen resolution or window size -> different jump points -> no error). So I'm not sure this report is of a lot of value, as it should be quite difficult to reproduce.

*edit*: This is using version 1.3.2, with TC 0 Base turned on (trying to fix the issue with the time code in source material being 00:00:00:000 somewhere in the middle.

Dear highc:
Thanks for you active feedback.

As you mentioned, there are crashes on the special points.
Are these points all around the 00:00:00:000 in the middle?

We want to know whether this issue is caused by the time code shift from negative to positive, or vice versa.

Looking forward to your further message.
Thank you very much.

Thanks for your response. I am not sure there is a clear answer to your question:
  • The desired cut points are before and after the time code shift.
  • The working cut points are as well before and after the time code shift. There seem to be certain points in the movie to which I should not scroll, as otherwise smart cutter starts having issues.
  • I can scroll across the time code shift. Smart cutter does not always crash. But when I just tried to zoom into onto the time code shift, at some point smart cutter did crash. This is, however, difficult to reproduce.
  • Since version 1.3.2, the time code shown is actually negative for a movie with a time code shift. Before that, smart cutter just showed the time code as it is in the data stream.
  • I think I saw smart cutter crashing with some movies without a time code shift. But that was surely before version 1.3.2, and may have been because of some other errors which have been fixed in the meantime.
I hope this information helps despite not being entirely clear.

Hi - I just came cross another TV recording where this happens again with Smart Cutter 1.3.5.

Is there anything I can do to help debugging?

Edit: Actually, this happens with both movies I recorded last night. Could it be that 1.3.5 has a bigger issue than previous versions again with recordings where the time code 0 is somewhere in the middle of the movie? I can't really check whether or not this is the case. The movie length is shown ok, and since Smart Cutter crashes when I scroll past a certain point, I can't tell what the time code thereafter is. Is there a source from which I could download previous versions of Smart Cutter?

Edit^2: It seems that Smart Cutter is not really crashing. If I just let it alone for a few minutes, it "recovers", i.e. I can continue scrolling through the movie. My machine is rather idling while I'm waiting for Smart Cutter. So it's not that something would be blocking CPU or HDD...
