Artifacts when cutting new BBC HiDef Material

Post by wavelet »

As you may know, the BBC have recently changed the encoding of their hi-def broadcasts in order to enable occasional transmission of 3D programmes. The frame size has changed from 1440x1080i to 1920x1080i and the GOP length has increased. The GOP length used to be usually 10-12 frames with perhaps the occasional long GOP up to 20 frames and a maximum of 3 consecutive B frames. Now the typical length is 24 frames with occasional long GOPs of up to 32 frames and up to 7 (I think) consecutive B frames.

When trying to cut these new streams I am getting blocking artifacts in the 1st GOP of the SmartCutter output.

I have uploaded a sample to the 'wavelet' subdirectory of your FTP site. Long_GOP_test.ts is the original stream and Long_GOP_test_cut.ts is the result of cutting from frame 198 to 3164. Hopefully you can see the artifacts in the first GOP of the Long_GOP_test_cut.ts file.

I have tried using v1.3.9f and v1.6.0 of SmartCutter and get the same result.

Thanks,

wavelet

Thanks for the new version. It now works properly with the test clip I sent you but unfortuantely, on another test clip, the program crashes!

Please look at the file Long_GOP_test2.ts in the wavelet directory of the ftp site.
If I load it into SmartCutter 1.6.2, set the start point to 00:00:27.12 (i.e. frame 678), set the end point to 00:02:58.24 (i.e. frame 4456) and click the red button to perform the cut, the program crashes with the following message:

Hopefully you can re-create this crash and investigate. This edit actually worked in SmartCutter 1.6.0 with no crash or artifacts.
